SILICA SAFETY ALERT
OSHA IMPLEMENTS STRICTER SILICA SAFETY RULE
WHAT IS IT? The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued a final rule, which dramatically reduces the allowed silica exposure limits for construction workers from 0.1mg/m3 to 0.05mg/m3. The new rule requires employers to use engineering controls (such as water or ventilation) to limit worker exposure, and provide respirators when engineering controls cannot adequately limit exposure.
WHO IS AFFECTED? All companies that employ the 2.3 million construction workers who drill, cut, crush, or grind silica-containing materials such as concrete and stone. If your employees use SAWS, DRILLS, JACK HAMMERS, DOWEL DRILLING RIGS, MILLING MACHINES, CRUSHING MACHINES OR GRINDERS, you will likely be affected by this rule.
WHEN DOES THE LAW GO INTO EFFECT? September 23, 2017
